Pity the poor human, we have but one kind of ear (unless you’re a rugby player or wrestler who never wore headgear). Glorious diversity abounds, however, if you’re a purebred dog: Tulip, hooded, bell, butterfly or bear; candle flame, button, V-shaped or prick. Trowel shaped, semi-drop, filbert or prick.
Ears tend to be smaller in breeds originating in cold climates to prevent heat loss, while large, pendulous ears are typically seen in scent dogs and help trap scent molecules as the ears fall forward when nose touches ground. Ear set, too, have a purpose. Dogs going after game, for example, typically have ears set out of reach of the prey, while large prick ears evolved for dogs that rely on more acute hearing.
