But first, a caveat. National Purebred Dog Day is proud to have a varied demographic of friends. We count among our pals medical professionals, pet owners, groomers, trainers, law enforcement, military dog handlers – and yes, dog show people (aka “fanciers”). Unless one is a fancier, however, the most exposure that some of us have gotten to the world of dog shows is from watching the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show on TV, or seeing the parody film, Best in Show. The dog show world is not one that everyone understands, and for people within the sport, it’s easy to forget how baffling the sport looked to us when we were new to it.

We have something to share that we think everyone should watch, not only to better understand dog shows, but to remember how foreign it all once seemed to those of us who’ve been in the sport a long time.

Chicken People is a funny and uplifting look at the world of show chickens and the people who love them. Starting at the largest national poultry competition (likened to Westminster), Chicken People follows three top competitors over the course of a year. The documentary is both humorous and touching, and we think it’s well worth your time to better understand its canine counterpart. Honest.
