Artist’s Thoughts: I first divided the canvas into eight sections representing the eight AKC recognized dog groups. Then I chose one breed from that group to be the face of the group. The groups are separated in space, but united in color and materials; much like the dogs are all separated into groups, but still remain dogs.
There are several different shapes, shades, and materials in this piece. I have used paint, glitter, fabric, and paper in combination to create this collage. This was to represent the form following function aspect of the required theme. The wording on the canvas was printed in specific fonts and colors from the AKC website and then distressed. Certain phrasing was chosen to highlight the traits that each group is best known for.
I am an animal lover and have owned Shelties and Border Collies. I treated each dog painting as a portrait of pet or a friend. I hoped to capture the love that exists between a dog and its owner as well as the dog’s individual personality.

Is there any way to see the FULL piece of art? I have the feeling we’re only seeing parts of these beautiful pieces, because of how both FB and this site are cropping the images. For example, this artist says she chose one breed from each group to be the face of the group, but there are only four dogs pictured here…
Any help appreciated!
