A “Break” When It comes to Coat Color

In dog parlance, a “break” is the changing coat color that happens in some breeds as puppies transition to adults. In our own breed, unless a Puli is a true silver, in which case the youngster is born a “gun metal black” as opposed to a “Mars” black (artists will “get” this) a “break” isn’t something that happens with much frequency. If it happens in your breed, however, we’d love to hear from you. What’s the breed, what color are they born, and how do you know what color they’ll turn out? Pictures are welcome!

DID YOU KNOW that “blue” Poodles are born black, then “clear” within 1 to 2 years? For this reason, many blue Poodles, who have only one dilution gene, are registered as black.

Our image of a Blue Poodle with daisies in its mouth on an abstract striped background is by Jess Lawrence. Prints of this are available for purchase here.

  1. Fawn Bouviers are born dark brown with a black mask. Puppy buys often think they are getting a nice dark golden fawn with a black mask (like a Great Dane) but most fate to blond or cream as they get older. Some unscrupulous breeders breed only fawns since the color is “rare” and in demand by pet buyers, but IMHO breeding fawns to each other causes dilution in the color.

    • Great point, Carol, and we’re happy you shared it here so we can always have it as important breed information. Thank you!
