Artist’s Thoughts: I really wanted to represent a dog from each of the 8 recognized AKC purebred groups. The challenge was to create a composition with all those dogs in one strong and attractive image, so I considered a group of dogs sitting, lying, etc together but felt it was a little bit repetitive of other imagery out there already, so I decided on a ‘portrait’ of each dog/group and a simple lovely color field behind each one – although I’ve had and do have, many purebred dogs, it was fun to explore the different groups and the many many individuals found in each, reading about their traits, and ‘makeup’ and getting excited about painting each unique one that I chose to represent. My design was created with a “blank” section for the title/wording of the poster to be easily placed in by either the graphic department finishing and printing the poster OR by myself – I can easily send a file WITH the wording placed into the image but thought it best to enter the image with just my painting of the dogs, knowing that NPDD would likely be creating the final graphic and wording.
