In another post, we shared a video about the awesome canine lifeguards in Italy, Newfoundlands or Labrador Retrievers, all of whom find joy? satisfaction? in saving people in distress.

When Henry Barnard (1810-1853) and his wife Lucinda Barnard (1813-1913) were laid to rest at Forrest Hills Cemetery, we think we understand why they chose a sandstone sculpture of a Newfoundland to watch over them. What comes after death is uncertain; a Newfoundland near by somehow offers comfort.

The sculpture was created by Henry Dexter in 1854.
