An Undeserved “Rep”

With its massive head, sleek white coat, and cropped or natural ears, the Dogo Argentino has an undeserved reputation as a fighting dog – and this is at odds with the reality of the breed. The dog from the southern part of South America was not only created to hunt in a pack in which fighting is not allowed, but any aggressive traits were specifically bred out during the development of the breed to ensure a stable cooperative nature in such a pack. That the breed has been used for illegal dog fighting is criminal, and we mean legally criminal, as well as morally. Caring owners describe the Dogo Argentino as great family dogs, wonderful companions and superb hunters (but not for first time dog owners), and yet the breed has been banned in several countries. When we met a Dogo at the AKC National Championship in 2017, we found an impressive dog who, like many breeds, was reserved, but friendly when respected. We had a “moment” with “Danica” at the 5:25 mark which is about the time we fell in love with her:

  1. Just a point of order: their primary utility is boar hunting, and historically when used to pursue big cats it’s typically mountain lions, which are far more common in Argentina than jaguar 🙂

  2. Thanks for the clarification, Katherine! Whatever they hunted (and it does matter, we do agree), we’ve been so impressed with this beautiful breed!
