The Schapendoes is still a rare breed outside of continental Europe, but the dog that historically has been the dog of the common people (if not of the poor illiterate Dutch farmer) is growing in popularity. Affectionately called the “shaggy sheep dog of Holland, it’s also known as the Dutch Sheepdog, Drent Sheepdog, Dutch Sheep Poodle, and the Nederlandse Schapendoes. Schapendoes are not the same breed as the Dutch Shepherd Dog despite the similarity in name. Word to the wise: Schapendoes refers to one dog; Schapendoezen is the plural for Schapendoes.
