Australian Shepherd Eyes

It’s sometimes said that watching an Australian Shepherd litter whelped is like opening a series of surprise packages. Will the next pup be black? Red? Among their many fine qualities, Australian Shepherds are also known for having unique eye coloring. This, admittedly, can be less of a surprise since blue eyes almost never appear in solid colored Aussies, and blue eyes and blue flecks in dark eyes occur in merles but aren’t all that predictable in a given litter. The AKC breed standard accepts blue, amber, or brown, eyes, or any variation or combination, including flecks and marbling. All eye colors are acceptable, and in combination with all coat colors. One eye color is not preferable over another in this terrific breed.

  1. I’ve bred Aussies for 27 years, and I never tire of the surprises with each litter. Not only can you get several colors in a litter, but even if you have a litter of all black tris, each one is still unique because of copper and white trim. Some have wide collars, some narrow, some none at all. Blaze or no blaze. How much white on the legs? They’re all unique! The downside is that then owners get their heart set on a particular color, forgetting that temperament and personality are most important. I doubt golden retriever breeders have that problem, LOL.
