Australia’s First Guide Dog

At the entrance to the Ivy Watson Playground in Kings Park, Australia stands a statue honoring Dr. Arnold Charles Cook, an Australian academic and economics lecturer at the University of Western Australia. Blind from the age of 18, Cook is noted not only for bringing the first overseas, professionally trained guide dog to Australia, but for his role in establishing the first guide dog training center in the country. The playground sculpture created by artist, Greg James, in 1989is by no means the only monument to Dr. Cook and his guide dog “Dreena,” a black Labrador bitch.  The one below stands at the Association for the Blind in Victoria Park, Western Australia.
