Basset Hound Surprises

A couple of things about the Basset Hound can be deceptive. If you only heard one bark without seeing the hound, you would think the deep, resonant bark belongs to a much larger dog. Check it out (and the first few seconds are all you need):

And speaking of size, did you know that Basset Hounds have more bone per pound than any other dog breed?  The standard height for a Basset is below 15 inches, but these surprisingly hefty dogs can weigh up to 70 pounds, and “woe is me” to the person with a bad back who tries to pick one up thinking it can’t be all that heavy. Most people struggle to carry a full-grown adult with its remarkably heavy bone (based on diameter, not length), powerful little legs, and massive paws. This low slung dog still possesses big-dog strength and stamina.
