If you’re not into Bollywood, the name, Shah Rukh Khan, will mean nothing to you. If, however, you’ve fallen in love with wonderful dancing, fabulous costumes, and convoluted, if not unrealistic romantic plots often presented in Hindi and with no kissing! then you probably know the “King of Bollywood,” “King Khan.” Kahn has appeared in more than 80 Bollywood films, and earned 14 Filmfare Awards, arguably the highest achievement in the Hindi language film industry of India.
Most of us got to know Kahn through a movie called, “Dil Se,” and we were lead to that movie by music that played during the closing credits of a a Spike Lee movie, “Inside Man,” starring Denzel Washington, Clive Owen, and Jodie Foster. In 2002, the BBC World Service conducted an international poll to choose the ten most popular songs of all time. Some 7,000 songs were selected from all over the world, and people from 155 countries voted “Chaiyya Chaiyya” their ninth pick in the top 10 songs. What knocked our socks off at the time we first saw it was seeing this culture in a way we’d never seen it before: The dancing, the moves – and those drop dead gorgeous singers. Below is the song, and the iconic sequence in which it was sung:
We’ve gotten wildly off track from the subject at hand, which is that Shah Rukh Khan is a purebred dog owner. His Peke, “Dash”passed away in 2015 leaving the heart throb heartbroken, but he currently has a Labrador Retriever named, “Hulk.” and two Maltese called “Juicy” and “Kaiand.” He’s not alone as a Bollywood star who owns purebred dogs: Amitabh Bachchan has a Great Dane, Salman Khan has Dogues de Bordeaux, and Ajay Devgan has two German Shepherds.
There’s more. One of Bollywood’s biggest stars is Salman Khan, the only actor to star in the highest-grossing Bollywood films in ten separate years. What breeds does he own?
Bollywood, it’s worth investigating on your favorite streaming platform.
I first saw Bollywood dance on So You Think You Can Dance and loved it. There was a really good one just last week.
Ooooooh, we’ll have to look for that one, Linda, thanks for the tip!
