I love the relationship our grandchildren now have with our Shelties. Our one Sheltie, Hattie, has been very calm and gentle even at a young age. I decided to do the training to have her become a therapy dog and she just became Certified at 4 years old. I have been taking her to schools, nursing homes, and places where children have gone through traumatic experiences. She always sits quietly with the children and lets them pet her and talk to her. The painting I am submitting is one with my one year old granddaughter, Bree. Our granddaughter is very shy and sensitive and it usually takes her a long time to warm up to new activities or meeting new people. When she sees Hattie her face lights up and she always wants to hug and snuggle with her. Hattie seems to have a special relationship with her and always sits quietly and kisses her back i knew I had to do an oil painting to capture this special bond they have.

Artist’s thoughts: I have owned Shetland Sheepdogs for the past 25 years and have loved their keen intelligence and gentle, kind spirit. When our children were young their herding instinct would come through when our boys were playing soccer or other games. They would run in circles to make sure our children and the neighborhood children would not run too far out of the yard. They were always very kind and gentle to any child and we never had to worry that they would be aggressive with children. Now that our children are grown and independent our shelties have become our fur babies. We currently own two and we love taking them to Agility classes where they do very well. Our one sheltie recently became a Certified Therapy Dog, and I take her to schools, hospitals, nursing homes, etc. They are always quick learners and a great size for us as we grow older. #NPDDArt2017
