Canada’s First Dog Commemorative Stamp

Over 70 percent of “face-different” canine design postage stamps issued by Canada over the last 58 years featured working dogs, according to Fred Baumann in an article for Linns Stamp News.

Canada’s first dog commemorative was a 5¢ stamp showing what appears to be an English Setter pointing for a hunter and was one of four Outdoor Recreation stamps issued in 1957. In 1967, a 1¢ stamp showed the most celebrated working dogs on Canada’s stamps, a dog-sled team. In 1988, Canada Post issued a block of 37¢ stamps (each with a different design) for the 100th anniversary of the Canadian Kennel Club. The stamps showed the now extinct Tahltan Bear Dog, the Canadian Eskimo Dog, the Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever, and the Newfoundland. You can read the article here.
