The Cardigan and Pembroke Welsh Corgis: Which One Recites Limericks?

Corgi owners may disagree, and because dogs are individuals,  one must make allowances for unique personalities, but when asked about the difference in temperament between the Cardigan Welsh Corgi and the Pembroke Welsh Corgi, we pass along something we were told years ago: When attending a party at the home of Corgis, the dignified Cardigan will answer the door, take your coat, offer you a beverage, and make polite small talk as you make your way into the house. Telling raucous jokes and jumping into the pool naked, however, will be the Pembroke Welsh Corgis.  It may be a tad overstated, but is it generally true, Corgi friends?

The Cardigan Welsh Corgi was developed in Cardiganshire,  the Pembroke Welsh Corgi in Pembrokeshire, and for some time, England’s Kennel Club classified them as two varieties of one breed. In fact, both breeds made their first official appearance at the English Kennel Club together under the same name, “Welsh Corgi” in 1925. Three years later, the Kennel Club officially recognized them as two distinct breeds, but, mistakenly still listed them both as Welsh Corgis, and it wasn’t until 1934 that the Kennel Club gave them separate status.

  1. I think the Cardigan is somewhat more reserved than the Pembroke – I’ve had both, so am aware of the descriptions! I do think the Cardigan disposition generally is less reserved than it used to be, more open and welcoming to people they don’t know. They are more deliberative and thoughtful, though, taking time to assess situations before diving in.

  2. Having owned both, I will say that description is true, although the Cardigan disposition has changed somewhat in the past few years. They are more outgoing now than in yesteryear. But I do find them more deliberative and thoughtful than the Pembroke.
