Clark Gable and a Cairn Terrier Named Terry

“Toto” was everyone’s favorite Cairn Terrier, and for many, she was their first exposure to the breed.  It was a clever dog named,”Terry” who portrayed Toto, but The Wizard of Oz was by no means her only movie. Terry appeared in films with Shirley Temple, Spencer Tracy, Mickey Rooney, Joan Crawford and Norma Shearer,  but one of her more memorable moments was one that never appeared on screen. On the occasion that Clark Gable came to meet her, Terry leapt up and knocked out Gable’s false teeth.

Leave it to a terrier.

  1. It was hot. It was the 4th of July. Everybody was gathered at the end of the cul de sac including our neighbor’s 1-year old pure-bred German Shepherd. Tongue hanging out, he was panting to cool off. My Cairn Terrier, named Toto, ran over to him, leapt up and bit his tongue. I heard a collective gasp. The German Shepherd was so stunned, he just looked at Toto who had the sense, by then, to come back to me.

    Leave it to a terrier.
