Pantone, famous for its color-matching system, began its “Color of the Year” tradition back in 2000. For the last twenty-four years, Pantone selects a color that reflects current trends in design, fashion, and culture, a color intended to serve as a symbolic representation of the “zeitgeist and influence”of fashion, interior design, and graphic design industries.
We try not to think of this as something akin to creating a designer dog breed, then forming a registry to “recognize” that breed, but Pantone evidently saw a niche in its industry, then filled it. That said, the “Color of the Year” is not without its critics. There are those who argue that the selection process is highly subjective, and worse, driven by commercial interests that impact industries in its sphere, but are not reflective of the real world.
Shoulder shrug.
By way of an example, no one really cares which film wins the Academy Award for Best Picture. Outside of the people involved with the movie, the choice has virtually no impact on the rest of us beyond being a momentary point of interest.
And that’s why we’re bothering to mention Pantone. Real life can weigh on us at times, so with this post, we offer a meaningless bit of distraction that, in a roundabout way, is also educational about one of our breeds, the Clumber Spaniel.
To bring you up to speed, Pantone’s Colors of the Year from 2000 to 2022 are:
- ,2000: Cerulean Blue
- 2001: Fuchsia Rose
- 2002: True Red
- 2003: Aqua Sky
- 2004: Tigerlily
- 2005: Blue Turquoise
- 2006: Sand Dollar
- 2007: Chili Pepper
- 2008: Blue Iris
- 2009: Mimosa
- 2010: Turquoise
- 2011: Honeysuckle
- 2012: Tangerine Tango
- 2013: Emerald
- 2014: Radiant Orchid
- 2015: Marsala
- 2016: Rose Quartz
- 2017: Greenery
- 2018: Ultra Violet
- 2019: Living Coral
- 2020: Classic Blue
- 2021: Ultimate Gray and Illuminating Yellow
- 2022: Very Peri
- Peach Fuzz
We should mention that the aforementioned list comes from Pantone’s own website, but the list is at odds with other sources we’ve cited in the past. Cue our second shoulder shrug.
We soldier on. We make the most of the color that appears twice on the list, “rose,” because it gives us an opening to tie the color into the only AKC breed that mentions “rose” in terms of color, and not ears.
The Clumber Spaniel’s AKC standard reads, “The nose is large, square and colored shades of brown, which include beige, rose and cherry.”
And now you know.
Check out other posts having to do with Pantene and our dog breeds:
We know you are curious about Pantene’s 2024 Color of the Year because we dog people are perpetual students and curious about everything. Wait no more, that color is Peach Fuzz.
Enter our third shoulder shrug. The actor known as “the Rock” wore a peach colored blazer at the 95th Academy Awards this year. Robert Montgomery wore a peach jacket to the Venice Film Festival, and Jen Tullock was in the color at the 29th Annual Screen Actors Guild.
What do we know? On these pages, we talk about colors accepted in a breed standard, but also those that aren’t and why it matters.
