The Corso Head

The head of the Cane Corso is arguably its most important feature. It is large, square, impressive, and in our view, commands respect. It’s what gives the breed tremendous presence, so much so that when a Cane Corso is in the room, you know it. The dog has a typical molosser head, its perimeter measured at the cheek-bones, and more than twice the total length of the head, even in the ladies. Put another way, the Corso’s cranium is twice as long as the muzzle, the width in the cheek-bones equal to the length of the skull.

Both the AKC and FCI Cane Corso standards are very detailed and pay particular attention to each aspect of the cranial region and facial region; even ears get into the act because in the view of some Corso enthusiasts, uncropped ears change the appearance of the head. Supporters of cropped ears in the breed maintain that uncropped ears are easily torn even while rough-housing with playmates. Ear wounds bleed profusely, and if the dog is a working dog, he can be blinded by his own blood while working, thus putting him in harm’s way. That said, cropping is no longer legal in many countries, and Cane Corsos with ears are becoming more common.

We came across this video that may be of interest to serious breed “junkies.”

  1. If the Cane Corso head is so important to you then you should take the time to learn the breed standard and choose a pictorial representative that better represents the correct head type for the breed. This dog is extremely undershot (prognostic), it’s nostrils are stenotic, it’s head has too many wrinkles and it’s eyes are too loose and incorrectly shaped. If you would like assistance choosing a dog that represents correct breed type, don’t hesitate to contact me. Sincerely, Jennifer Messer

    • Thanks for your input, Jennifer. We don’t purport to be Cane Corso experts and use artwork to err on the side of “artistic license.” Your response above helps other readers learn from someone who really knows the breed, and perhaps you would share a picture here of a good Cane Corso head?
