Move over, Pongo, Tramp and Mr. Peabody, there’s a new animated dog in town, “Dante.”
As you see, Dante is a Xoloitzcuintle who is the canine star of the Pixar short, Dante’s Lunch, which is our first introduction to the determined dog that will appear in Pixar’s film, Coco, when it comes out on November 22, 2017.
We have to rely on Xolo owners to weigh in on this, but it’s said that while doing research for Coco, animators learned that Xolos are prone to lose teeth, resulting in their tongues lolling out of their mouths. They took the idea and ran with it when incorporating it into the Dante character. “We thought we would kind of embrace that and make it part of Dante’s character,” the film director, Lee Unkrich explained, “So his tongue is almost its own character, separate from him.”
Is this movie likely to create a huge demand for Xolos as it did for Dalmatians following the classic, 101 Dalmatians? Hard to say. A “run on Pulik” following some appearances of a Puli in commercials, and the “Zuckerberg Effect” never happened, but one couldn’t find a greater contrast in dogs than between a Puli and a Xolo, and presumably, the public took one look at the Puli coat and thought, “Uh, no.” Xolo fanciers, is there any discussion within your clubs about this movie?
