“Don’t Look at Me in that Tone of Voice”

We begin with a few “choice” quotes:

• “Why, that dog is practically a Phi Beta Kappa. She can sit up and beg, and she can give her paw — I don’t say she will but she can.”

• “You can drag a horticulture, but you can’t make her think.”

• “I don’t care what anybody says about me as long as it isn’t true.”

•  “The cure for boredom is curiosity. There is no cure for curiosity.”

• “Beauty is only skin deep, but ugly goes clean to the bone.”

• “The first thing I do in the morning is brush my teeth and sharpen my tongue.”

It’s well known that Sir Walter Scott owned this breed, but the author of the comments above, Dorothy Parker, was also a Dandie Dinmont Terrier owner, a dog named, “Timothy.” Actually, Parker owned a variety of dogs in her lifetime, including a couple of Boston Terriers, several Poodles, a Bedlington Terrier, a Dachshund, Scottie, Boxer, Dalmatian and a mutt. While Parker was an American poet, short story writer and critic, we most admire her for her wicked wisecracks.
