Expression is a large part of breed type,  a significant quality that makes us besotted with the breed we love. We can’t always put a finger on it, but in the case of the Japanese Chin, we actually can. The breed standard mentions a “look of astonishment,” and further explains that a small amount of white showing in the inner corners of the eyes is the breed characteristic that gives the dog that look of astonishment.
