Artist’s Thoughts: My entry for the National Day of the Dog depicts the origins of the first dogs, and their partnership with us. The dog in the image is “any dog, and every dog” I wanted to show how dogs have been useful in our physical survival, hunting, herding. The image of Kokopelli and the dancing dog is meant to speak about companionship, and the spirituality of our relationship with dogs. This speaks to the fact that dogs wish to partner with us in all that we do. The dog in the painting is jumping from the shadowy past into the bright colorful future.
The dog in the center is an oil painting done in a loose style using bright color. I wanted the image to jump out at the viewer. The background needed to feel like a cave wall so I used torn mulberry paper, and superimposed the cave paintings images over the colored paper, much the same way pigment was added to cave walls. The Australian figure with the stick is urging our main character onward into the future.
The images in the back ground are actual images from cave paintings, The paintings are from America (Tennessee), South Africa, Australia, Israel, and the Lascaux Caves from South-western France. These “Proto” Dogs are the ancestors of all of our modern dogs.
I looked at your entries from past years and imagined this image with a suitable caption. It would be: Form Follows Function – From Cave to Course because a lot can happen in 2000 years! Just an Idea.
