The Azawakh was historically the guardians, hunters and companions of the Tuareg, as well as other southern Sahel ethnic tribes, but it was Yugoslavia in the early 1970s that saw the first Azawakh outside its native land. Dr. Pecar, a Yugoslavian diplomat stationed in Burkina Faso, received his male as a gift from the nomads (the dogs cannot be bought or sold). To get a female, he later bartered his services as a hunter by dealing with a bull elephant who’d been terrorizing the tribe. If you ever, EVER get a chance to see an Azawakh, take it. Not to put too fine a point on it, but in our view, this is a unique breed, and to look into their eyes is to look into the sands of time.
