Guinefort, the Greyhound

French legend tell us how Guinefort, the Greyhound, saved his master’s baby from a snake only to be mistakenly killed by that master who thought the dog had attacked the infant. Local peasants regarded Guinefort as a saint and took their children to his grave for healing. The church took a dim view of the “cult” of St. Guinefort in the 13th century and banned it, but you can’t keep dog people down. The belief lasted into the 20th century.

  1. I have been following your articles for almost a year. I have throughly enjoyed the history, the descriptions of their jobs and education of the various breeds.

I also have shared this with Grand Rapids Kennel Club, Greater Muskegon Kennel Club and West Michigan Apple Blossom and Harvest Cluster Dog Show Cluster who i am the administrator of these 3 Facebook Groups and Pages.

Please continue your great works. Everyone looks forward to your post.

    • Patricia, you just never know when the exact thing you need to hear shows up on your door step. Thank you so very much for the kind words, and the encouragement! We don’t always know if anyone out there is paying attention, so you’ve made our day, thank you!!!
