Artist’s Thoughts: I really wanted to capture the spirit, personality, and likeness of the dog. By painting in oil, I kept certain details while loosely rendering in other areas.

To me, one of the key hallmarks of almost every breed is their expression, which is most often conveyed in their eyes. I think it’s one of the reasons that breed standards spend so much time on eye shape, color, placement, and orientation….This picture captures so well the pug expression… eyes: soft and solicitous
in expression, very lustrous, and, when excited, full of fire! Amazing that eyes can be *simultaneously solicitious and “full of fire”!
