Artist’s Thoughts: The portrait, “Henry the Magnificent” was created after my best friend, Henry, passed away, to celebrate his wonderful character and gentle disposition. It was painted in oils, using a limited palette of only three main colors: titanium white, burnt umber, and ultramarine blue. The fourth color was a tiny amount of Indian Yellow added to the white to elevate the highlights. Since he was a black and white pied French Bulldog, I thought it fitting to limit the colors. The portrait was painted on a 6-sided polygon birch panel. Besides the fact that the angles of the panel play nicely with the angles of his profile, being as special as he was, a simple and ordinary 4-sided panel just wouldn’t do.
