Before Elvis Presley performed the biggest hit of his career, Big Mama Thornton recorded the Lieber-Stoller song, “Hound Dog,” in 1952. ”  It was Mama Thornton’s only hit record, selling over 500,000 copies. Elvis got the song from Freddie Bell and the Bellboys who’d rewritten the words, and the rest is history.
