We started our trip to the 2017 AKC National Championship with a good deed: A Dachshund owner sitting next to us at the airport gate left behind her leash which we retrieved and made sure was returned to her on the plane. Four days later, we were waiting for our suitcase to appear on the baggage carousal at the airport and stood next to the same Dachshund owner whose dog now had the formerly missing leash attached to his collar. What were the odds?
It seems fitting, then, to mention that according to “Dogs” by Desmond Morris, the Dachshund was once known as the Beagle Terrier for reasons we can’t fathom. To add to the confusion, a Beagle Terrier is also a British single-engined monoplane built by Beagle Aircraft. These days, a Dachshund is often called a Dachshie, and you want to make sure that that’s the spelling you use because “Doxie,” according to any dictionary, refers to a strumpet, slut, floozy, hussy, tramp, trollop, hoochie, minx, wench – well, you get the idea. So, purebred dog people, friends don’t let friends spell the “D” word the wrong way. Just saying.

I have never heard a Dachshund referred to as a “beagle terrier” and own many dog references that date back a 100+ years. I think Morris completely made that up. He is a zoologist… that does not mean he knows anything about pure bred dogs.
Maybe, Tracy. We source many different authors, experts, cynologists and fanciers when coming up with our posts, and we always hope that when we mention something rather obscure, it will either jog a memory in someone, or compel someone else to say, “That’s nonsense!”
