Artist’s Thoughts: The Chateau de Beauregard (Loire Valley, France) contains an amazing Gallery of Portraits (the Gallery). It is the largest in Europe and has 327 paintings of French kings, queens, and other famous people that lived between 1328 and 1643. Illuminated Purebreds combines the portrait techniques of the Gallery with purebreds as the subjects. My heroic Toby is the Australian Shepherd. The images are painted on Luan wood veneer, embellished with gold paint, and hand lettered with the attributes of each purebred.

  1. I love how the structure of framing each portrait and listing their attributes brings unity to this collection of different breeds, each with their own breed-specific expression and carriage!
