At home, our breeds hang around in their “natural state,” but at a dog show, some breeds are still supposed to be shown in a “natural” state. Is yours one of them?
The Pyrenean Shepherd in its rough coated form is supposed to look “windswept,” and that’s written in the AKC breed standard: “….A small, sinewy, lean, lively dog whose sparkling personality and quicksilver intelligence are reflected in the vibrant expression of his unique triangular head and windswept face.”
A good example of this is the Pyrenean Shepherd which is supposed to look “windswept,” and that’s written in the AKC breed standard: ….A small, sinewy, lean, lively dog whose sparkling personality and quicksilver intelligence are reflected in the vibrant expression of his unique triangular head and windswept face). According to the Encyclopedia of Canine Terminology, the windblown look is due to hair a the end of the muzzle being naturally short, and then lengthening as the muzzle widens towards the skull. This gives this breed its characteristic expression.
It is said that “nature created this breed. He was made by the mountains and wind.” Who can argue with this?

Aw, thanks for sharing about the Pyr Shep. I love the fact that they are a “natural” breed. I hope that never changes. They are definitely a breed apart and very adapted to mountain living. I live in Colorado with my two and they run up and down cliffs and scare me half to death. It is what they are bred for. I have seen pictures of them taking sheep down the sides of mountains that are only fit for bighorns. They adore snow and are small and light enough to run over the top of drifts. They aren’t big fans of heat but any other weather if just fine with them.
It’s our pleasure, Melinda! The Pyr Shep is truly an amazing breed, and we know exactly what you mean about adapting to mountains: Of the posts we have on our website about the breed, the video in this one took our breath away: https://nationalpurebreddogday.com/a-gutsy-pyr-shep/
