Maximillian Talisman, Boatswain’s Mate Third Class,Service Number 224-859 of the U.S. Coast Guard was a remarkable Coast Guardsman – and a Boxer. He had a stellar career that started the minute he came aboard the Klamath in December, 1950 with his owner, a Coast Guard officer. Like any crew member, he had papers drawn up that included his service record, and health and dental charts that were kept up to date by the ship’s yeoman. When his master was transferred from the ship, Max was given to the crew which accepted him with heartfelt appreciation.

Max served at sea onboard a cutter for seven years during which time he crossed the International Date Line twice, the Arctic Circle once, and visited Japan, Guam, the Aleutian Islands, Hawaii, Midway, and Canadian and west coast American ports. He qualified as a bridge look-out, reached the rank of Chief Boatswain’s Mate, and earned a Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Ribbon, United Nations Medal, and the Korean Service Medal.

Upon his retirement, Max was “piped” off his ship a final time to live at the home of Donald R. Haight,Boatswain’s Mate 1 in Seattle.
