The Miniature American Shepherd Takes Gold! Sort of

What’s better than the “home team” winning a gold medal at the Olympics? Having them appear on the cover of Sports Illustrated with their purebred Miniature American Shepherd!

At seventeen years old, the English/Korean/and French speaking Chloe Kim is the youngest female snowboard champion in Olympic history, and she won her gold in the half pipe competition. “Half pipe” competition is run on a U-shaped course with 22-foot high walls which snowboarders use to perform various complex tricks at high speeds.

It’s not for sissies.

How a southern California girl learned to do this was by accident. Her dad didn’t want to go snowboarding alone, and took Chloe along for company. Fast forward to 2016, and Chloe became the first – and only – woman to land back-to-back 1080s, (three full revolutions, or 1080 degrees rotation, in the vertical plane while airborne).

We love that Chloe draped her gold medal over “Reese,” her year old dog, though it’s always humbling when a dog has more social media followers than most of us have (we suppose “Reese” shakes off her nearly 12 million followers on her Instagram page). Even more fun, however, are the outtakes from the Sports Illustrated photo shoot which you can see here.

After the big win, Chloe made sure to give Reese a shout-out on Instagram: “THANK YOU @sportsillustrated and @reesetheminiaussie for staying still and being a good girl ?.” As an aside, while most everyone has been identifying Reese as a Miniature Australian Shepherd, the AKC recognizes her breed as the Miniature American Shepherd.
