We’ll be posting today as we always do, but we begin by remembering how the world changed fifteen years ago today, and of victims and heroes, neither of which will ever be forgotten. The last of the 300 canine heroes, Search and Rescue dog, Bretagne, (pronounced “Brittany”) passed away in June of this year, just shy of her 17th birthday.
Bretagne and her person, Denise Corliss, worked Ground Zero. It was their first deployment together, but later, they worked as a search team in response to Hurricane Katrina, Hurricane Rita, Hurricane Ivan and other disasters. Bretagne retired at the age of nine and worked with children on their reading skills. Even in death, Bretagne gave her all. A post mortem was undertaken at Texas A&M University as part of a long-running study of 9/11 search dogs.
To all our readers, stay safe today.
This is my friend, Chris Buff’s dog Mittru – also at Ground Zero from beginning to end. Brave, fearless hero – both of them
How wonderful, Susan. We’re humbled by such heroes.
