On a rainy Thursday in 1514, a Polish ship sailing from Gdansk to Scotland carried a cargo of grain to swap for Scottish sheep. The vessel also carried six Polish Owczarek Nizinny to help move the sheep. A shepherd wearing stiff tan Carhartts (we’re checking to see if you’re paying attention) liked the look and work ethic of the dogs, and asked to exchange one of his rams for a pair of the dogs. A deal was struck, and one ram and a ewe was traded for two females and a male dog belonging to a breed we call Polish Lowland Sheepdogs today.
