Figuratively speaking, there’s something for everyone in a Portuguese Podengo. The breed comes in three sizes (grande:large, medio:medium, and pequeno: small), and each size has two coats types – wirehaired and smooth haired – which means we have six different ways to love the breed. Historically, the smooth-haired version was more popular in the rainier northern territory of the country, probably because these dogs dried quickly. The wire-coated variety, meanwhile, was popular in drier areas because these coats offered protect against the sun and heat.

Only the small (pequeno) is recognized by the AKC and Kennel Club, while in the US, the Medio and Grande are still in the AKC’s Miscellaneous Class.
