Pugs, We Know, But Who is Brigid Berlin?

Her best friends were her Pugs, her needlepoint, and Andy Warhol. Dad was chairman of the Hearst media empire for three decades, and one of her little sisters engineered the defection of Russian ballet star, Mikhail Baryshnikov.  Her name is Brigid Berlin, and of her, Patty Hearst* observed: “On my first day at work, I noticed two small Pugs who seemed to have the run of the castle. They belonged to a woman who sat behind the front desk every day from 9:00 to 5:00, but who never seemed to answer the phone. Instead, she compulsively knitted, ate bags of candy and tended lovingly to the dogs.”

Needlepoint and Pug paraphernalia filled her apartment at the time of an interview published in New York Social Diary in 2008. Read it, and see her amazing Pug collection (including her Pug needlepoint shoes!) here.

*Patty Hearst Shaw, as it happens, is a fancier and has been a regular on the dog-show circuit for more than decade. Her French Bulldog, “Tuggy,” won Best of Breed at Westminster this past February.

  1. Patty Hearst Shaw’s Shih Tzu, Rocket, won the Toy Group at Westminster in 2015. I love that she’s a dog show person…one of our fold, if you will.
(And fascinating info about Brigid Berlin)
