As adults, our hearts are tugged by stories of bravery displayed by our dogs, but to a child, these stories can plant roots that grow large over a lifetime. The world is filled with such accounts, but some of these stories are quiet, humble, and little known outside a community. Let us share the story of “Leo.”
“Leo” was a small Dachshund whose favorite place with in a cuddle-lock with his owners. He tended to shy away from other dogs, when when a much larger dog attacked a 10 year old child, Leo defended her and paid with his life. He didn’t stand a chance, and despite efforts by veterinarians, his injuries were too severe and Leo died two days later. The citizens of the northern Serbian town wanted to remember Leo, and in 2015, a life-size bronze statue of the mighty Dachshund was erected next to a children’s playground. The bronze honored Leo and will forever teach children about the loyalty of dogs, our bond with them, and the meaning of sacrifice. This is particularly important in a region that has notoriously low standards in animal welfare and protection. Leo’s is the first dog monument in Serbia, and his presence can only serve to raise awareness about how important animals are to us. The inscription on Leo’s monument reads: “To all the small heroes with big hearts.”
