The Stab-Proof Dog Vest

The first dogs in New Zealand to receive stab-resistant harnesses that protect them the same way that stab-resistant vests protect their handlers are, not surprisingly, police dogs, and specifically, German Shepherd Dogs. The overall design made of “Mako” cordura fabric (milspec nylon and trelleborg material) doesn’t absorb moisture, and features two panels of layered polymer that protect from stabbing, slashing, kicks and blows. Twenty three layers of the polymer are used, though just ten are enough to stop penetration from stabbing. Each vest has handles and reflective panels, and can be outfitted with cameras, GPS units, velco straps and loops for attachments. The sometimes cumbersome stab proof material can be removed if required. The vests aren’t bullet-proof since ballistic armor capable of stopping a shot would seriously affect mobility.

“Asta,” a police dog in Tauranga, New Zealand, was the first to receive her ‘Mako harness’ and demonstrated its functionality in specialist training with the Armed Offender Squad. In the video below, another dog named, “Ike,” gave the vest a test run and seems unbothered by it.
