State Dog of Louisiana

It’s safe to safe that most of the dog breeds we have in the United States were created somewhere else, but that’s not the case for the Catahoula Leopard Dog. It originated in North Central Louisiana.

The breed took its name from the geographic region area around Catahoula Lake. The word “Catahoula” is rooted in the Choctaw Indian culture and translates as “sacred lake.” That said, other names for the breed include Leopard dog, Leopard cur, Catahoula hound and Catahoula hog dog. One more name for the breed: State Dog of Louisiana.

  1. Just lost my Cur Dog today. He was 13 and the sweetest oaf you would ever meet unless he was protecting my kiddos. Your picture looks just like him but both his eyes were honey brown.

    • Nancy, having lost one of our own very recently, we keenly feel your pain and are so sorry for your loss. RIP, dear boy.
