Striving for Balance

The Vizsla is one breed that is truly able to perform in all venues, and often does.  Unlike a few other gun dog breeds, there really aren’t show bred and field bred lines in the breed, in large part because the Vizsla Club of America encourages member breeders to produce dogs that conform to the standard and can do the job for which they were bred. There are plenty of Master Hunter Vizslak that go from a win in the conformation ring to winning field trials and hunt tests, then accompany their owners on a weekend hunting trip. It’s no coincidence that a dog named, “Chartay” who became the first ever AKC Quintuple Champion was a Viszla. That said, are there are those who breed extremes, or dogs that can do one thing but not the other? Sure, but our sense is that by and large, heritage Vizsla breeders aim for balance by breeding for dogs that can earn a title at both ends of their name.
