“The Amsterdam Dog Market”

Old art is a wondrous insight into how different dog breeds appeared at the time of the image was created.  “The Amsterdam Dog Market,” was painted in 1677 by a Dutch “Golden Age” artist, Abraham Hondius, and it is regarded as Hondius’ masterpiece. He painted the piece in great detail showing over sixteen distinct dog breeds seen in the day. We’re not quite sure why Hondius included an array of dog collars at the right front of the painting, but it’s quirky and we like it. Care to take a stab at identifying the breeds?

  1. Could you give me a call. The painting is now at the AKC Museum of the Dog as a loan. The owner brought this to my attention. It will become part of the museum’s collection in 2020. Please contact me regarding permissions and credit line.
