The Corgi’s Name

It’s believed by many that the name, “Corgi,” originated from the Welsh word for “dwarf” (“cor”) and “ci,” the word for dog. Another view, however, is that “cur dog” can be traced back to the 1574 “Dictionary in Englyshe and Welshe” where “Korgi ne gostoc” (or Corgi or curre dogge) is referenced.
Stephanie S. Hedgepath wrote that the use of the “K” rather than the “C” was perfectly proper at the time, and eventually the “K” was no longer used interchangeably with the “C.” She goes on to write that the connection of “Corgi” with the word, “Cur” has ample historical support since there are several references to “Corgwn” (the plural of Corgi – pronounced Corg’n, sound out like oxen) in many a cywydd (a song of praise) in the 14th and 15th centuries.
