The Duke of Windsor: Purebred Dog Fan

History may best remember the Duke of Windsor for abdicating the British royal throne in 1936 to marry the woman he loved. Purebred dog owners, however, may want to add this “factoid” to his legacy: He loved his purebred dogs. He owned Cairn Terriers earlier in his life, but later on, Pugs became his passion and with his wife, Wallis Simpson, he owned at least eleven of them, most bred in the United States. “Imp,” “Disraeli,” “Trooper,” “Mr. Chu,” “Rufus,” “Winston,” “Davy Crockett,” “Minoru,” “Ginseng” and “Diamond” were among them. One celebrated anecdote involved “Diamond” who slept on the Duke’s bed, but ran away about two weeks before the Duke died. Just hours before the Duke passed away, Diamond returned home to everyone’s great surprise.
