The Hounds

University of Indiana, mascot, greyhoundLots of universities and companies have dogs as their mascot or logo, including Greyhound buses, which everyone knows. But did you also know that the University of Indianapolis has as its mascot the Greyhound? In 1926, the first home game of the season was against Earlham College, and fans of the Cardinal and Grey Warriors (as University of Indiana athletes were known then) convened in Men’s Hall to choose a name that would do justice to the scrapping Cardinal and Grey Warriors. They decided that they identified with a “a long, lean animal renowned for its speed, jumping prowess and fighting heart,” and the athletic teams became known as the Greyhounds (or just “hounds). Their current mascot is a Greyhound named “Ace” who appears at games and events all around the city.
