How does any breed find its way into a country not of its origin?
In Canada, credit Joseph Sulyak de Papp for bringing the first two Kuvaszok into the country. The Hungarian artist and civil engineer imported the dogs from Germany, and a year later, got another pair from a Czechoslovakia zoo in exchange for two Canada wild geese (as an aside, and in the interest of education, we want to mention that these geese should never be called “Canadian Geese.” They are “Canada Geese,” a protected species that winters where National Purebred Dog Day was founded).
As of 1998, the Kuvasz was still a new breed in Australia, and the first generation of Kuvasz puppies was born late 1999. We’ve been unable to find current reports about the status of the breed in that country, but we’d love to hear from you if you have insights!
