When Callie racked up more than 250 flying hours in a six seater Cessna light aircraft, she was given her own crew card, not that unusual unless you’re a Labrador Retriever. Callie is, in fact, the only dog in the UK to be recognized by the Aircraft Owners and Pilots’ Association. In 2014, Callie was made an honorary member of the Civil Air Patrol.
The chocolate Lab first “went up” when she was three months, and now, the six year old is an old hand at leaping into the Cessna 210 Centurion. She has her own goggles, a fluorescent jacket that, as soon as its put on, signals that she’s going flying, a special harness to strap her into the cockpit, and is rewarded with a sausage when she lands.
In 2017, Callie made more news by gaining more than 600 flight hours with her owner, Graham Mountford. Many of the hours are logged as the pair help to train and acclimate Search & Rescue dogs to the sights and sounds of a small plane. Mountford is currently training a new dog, one-year-old dog, Pippin, to follow in Callie’s paw-prints. “She’s learning to fly,” he said, “but she’s not quite as practiced yet.”
