The AKC breed standard accepts both a smooth or broken coat in the Parson Russell Terrier, and the UKC standard accepts the broken, smooth and rough.
A broken coat is not as heavy as a rough coat. It’s typically only slightly broken, almost like a smooth, but with a few longer hairs around the mouth and down the center of the back. That said, it can be with more hair all over, just not as much as a rough. The rough coat also has a lot of hair and is very dense.
When asked if owners found any differences in personality, energy level, etc. between the coat types, most concurred that there wasn’t any.
