Terriers have a well earned reputation for being scrappy, spirited – and vociferous. Terrier owners love all these qualities in their dogs when it’s displayed in an appropriate setting (barking is important in dogs bred to go to ground!), but most terriers have yet to find a time or a place when their opinion isn’t worth sharing.
There is one terrier, however who has a reputation for being the quietest of all the terriers, and that’s the Border Terrier. There are exceptions to every rule, of course, but by and large, the Border isn’t a “yappy” dog. This isn’t to say that the Border isn’t “all terrier.” Created in Northumberland in the mid 19th century, this is tough, hardy breed bred to hunt vermin, fox, and otter, and its “hard as nail” temperament when in the field is legendary.
