Up until 1979, Norfolk and Norwich Terriers were shown together in competition as Norwich Terriers despite their different ear types (one has an erect ear, the other, a folded drop ear). After that year, the AKC went along with the example set by the Kennel Club of England and established a new breed name, Norfolk Terrier, for the drop eared dogs. Interestingly, one breed was named for a town and the other for a county. The town of Norwich is in the county of Norfolk.
How to tell which is which? Think of a witch – or more precisely, a witch’s hat which is pointy, just as the ears are on a Norwich Terrier.
