They Teach What Others Ought Not to Know

“They love above all things to get away with a young retriever and ruin him forever, teaching him everything he ought not to know.” Seriously, is this not an apt job description of a terrier?

In this case, this quote was said of the West Highland White Terrier by Col. Edward Malcolm, a Westie breeder and fancier whose family kept Westies for generations, though they called their strong willed dog the Poltalloch Terrier after the family estate. In 1908, the AKC registered the breed for the first time as the Roseneath Terrier, but the name was changed to West Highland White Terrier in 1909. In fact, an imported bitch named, “Sky Lady,” born in 1906 in England was the first Westie to be officially registered as a “West Highland White Terrier.”
